The cube contains iron filings suspended in a viscous liquid. When a magnet is placed inside the cube, the iron filings align themselves along the magnetic field lines, making them visible. This allows for a mess-free and safe way to study magnetic fields, as the filings are sealed inside the clear acrylic box. The patterns created by the filings can be observed from all angles and can be manipulated by moving a magnet around the outside of the cube
