A magnetic stirring bar consists of a permanent magnet sealed within a protective, chemically inert coating. When placed inside a vessel on a magnetic stirrer plate, the bar rotates in response to the plate's rotating magnetic field, effectively mixing the solution. This method is favored for its ease of use, quiet operation, and low risk of contamination, since the vessel can be completely sealed.
