Description

iMSand (Interactive Sand) is an augmented reality sandbox designed for education, therapy, and inclusive learning. It combines a physical sandbox filled with special sand and real-time computer graphics: a depth sensor tracks the shape of the sand, while a projector overlays dynamic visuals (like topographic maps, water, terrain features, etc.) onto the sand surface. This creates a highly interactive, tactile learning environment. The system also supports a “table mode”: when users place a lid over the sandbox, they can play educational games using physical wooden blocks with letters and symbols. It’s particularly useful in therapeutic settings, inclusive classrooms, and environments focused on neurodiversity and language learning

Features

Dual-Mode Interactivity:

• Sandbox Mode: Real-time terrain shaping — change the sand, and the projected graphics respond accordingly via depth mapping.

• Table Mode: With a lid on the sandbox, use wooden blocks with letters/numbers/symbols for language games or learning tasks. Educational & Therapeutic: Designed for STEAM subjects (geography, physics), language learning, and therapeutic use (especially neurodiverse learners).

Inclusive Design: Built following Universal Design principles — usable by people with varied abilities. Tactile & Sensory Learning: Physical manipulation of sand supports motor skills, cognitive development, and sensory integration. Real-Time Projection: Uses a 3D depth sensor and a projector to overlay dynamic graphics (water, hills, contour lines) on the sand.

Learning Content: Includes educational “games” and scenarios  – for language, math, science, storytelling, and more. Mobility: The system is moveable; the sandbox module has wheels for easy repositioning. Neurodiversity Focus: Designed to support learners with special needs by promoting linguistic inclusion, social interaction, and cognitive flexibility.
