Description

The MK3 is a popular aluminum heated bed for 3D printers, known for its dual-voltage capability, efficient heat distribution, and durable construction. It was developed as an upgrade to earlier versions like the MK2 and is compatible with many RepRap-style printers, including variants of the Prusa i3.

Features

  • Dual voltage compatibility: The MK3 is designed to run on both 12V and 24V power supplies. The wiring configuration changes based on the power source, giving users flexibility with their setups.
  • 12V setup: Typically uses around 10 amps and provides a slower heat-up time.
  • 24V setup: Uses fewer amps (around 5) and offers faster heating, sometimes reaching 100°C in just a few minutes.
  • Integrated heating element: The heating traces are integrated directly into the aluminum substrate, a design that improves thermal conductivity and stability compared to earlier PCB-only versions.
  • Maximum temperature: A typical MK3 bed can reach maximum temperatures of up to 180°C, though a more standard operating temperature is around 110°C, which is suitable for printing with ABS filament.
  • Multiple sizes available: While a common size for Prusa i3 printers is 214mm x 214mm, the MK3 is available in many sizes, including 220x220mm, 250x250mm, 310x310mm, and larger for different printer models.
  • Flat print surface: The manufacturing process results in a very flat surface, often with a flatness tolerance of ±0.2mm or better, which is crucial for achieving good first-layer adhesion.
  • Pre-drilled holes: The bed comes with pre-drilled and often countersunk mounting holes, allowing for a flush fit that keeps the printing surface completely flat. Some models feature a five-hole pattern, offering both three-point and four-point mounting options.
  • Integrated thermistor option: Many MK3 heated beds are sold with an integrated 100K thermistor, along with power cables, for easy installation and monitoring of the bed's temperature.
  • Supports various materials: The reliable and even heating provided by the MK3 bed makes it suitable for printing with a wide range of filament types, including PLA, ABS, PETG, and others.
